Drive In Theaters.
The drive-in joins the scale of a private car to the scale of a public spectacle. Its screen and roadside sign address different audiences, one already inside and another still deciding to enter. Margolies’s photographs let us study that threshold: the entrance, the name and the promise of an evening beyond it. Look across the collection for variations in lettering, approach and landscape, and use the photograph date to locate each image within his travels.
