Movie Theaters.
Movie theaters make an occasion of an entrance. Their marquees, vertical signs and decorated fronts frame the short journey from an ordinary street into a shared performance. Compare an Egyptian-inspired façade with the lettering of a smaller neighborhood cinema, then follow the stories of the Egyptian, Fargo and Alamo theaters. Those histories connect particular buildings with their architects, audiences and documented changes, while the photographs preserve the visual invitation at the sidewalk.
